Nurture at St Crispin's
We are thrilled to announce that St Crispin’s has achieved the National Nurturing Schools Programme award. This prestigious award is presented to schools that have succeeded in creating a nurturing culture for the children in their care and currently, we are one of only two primary schools in Thanet to achieve this status. The award is evidence of our success in implementing and embedding a nurturing culture that responds to the social, emotional and mental health needs of our children, alongside their academic studies. Research has shown that children who attend a National Nurturing School can benefit from a whole-school approach that places their strengths and needs at the heart of practice, enabling them to flourish and be the best they can be. The culture helps to grow children’s confidence whilst improving their attendance and attainment.
During the assessment process, our Nurture UK assessor told us that they were “very impressed with the quality of the application” and “the excellent practice around the 6 principles” of Nurture which we have turned into child-speak so that we can refer to them regularly with the children and ensure they are easily understood.
Six Principles of Nurture
- We learn what we are ready to learn.
- We are safe in our classroom.
- Our teachers like us and they listen to us. This makes us feel good.
- We are encouraged to use our words to tell people what we want.
- Our teachers know when we are not happy and they try to help us.
- We are told what we will be doing each day.
Practice in all Nurturing schools is based on and guided by the Six Principles of Nurture. We have taken these principles and translated them into child speak so that we can refer to these when working with the children. As an example of how we are raising the profile of these principles we have provided Nurture Nooks in each classroom to support the idea that the classroom offers a safe space, as well as establishing a Harbour Room.
We are pleased that our commitment to developing an ethos and culture that is inclusive has been acknowledged with this accreditation and hope that our community can benefit from having a school that demonstrates its central role in the lives of our children.
